About Best Air Purifiers
Independent air purifier reviews for UK homes. No manufacturer funding. No paid placements. Just data.
Our Mission
Best Air Purifiers exists because we got tired of air purifier reviews that rewrite manufacturer spec sheets and call it journalism. Too many review sites have never unboxed the products they recommend. We wanted to build something better.
Our mission is simple: test air purifiers in real UK homes with real instruments, then tell you exactly what we found. No jargon, no filler, no rankings influenced by commission rates. Every product on this site has been physically tested by our team. If we have not tested it, it does not appear here.
We focus exclusively on the UK market because air quality concerns, home sizes, humidity levels, and product availability differ significantly from the US and European markets. A purifier that is ideal for a 40-square-metre apartment in Berlin may not suit a 25-square-metre Victorian terrace bedroom in Manchester. Our recommendations account for UK-specific conditions.
How We Test
Every air purifier we review goes through a standardised testing protocol in our test rooms in South London. Here is exactly what we measure and how.
PM2.5 and PM10 particle levels. We use a Temtop M2000 particle counter to measure fine and coarse particulate matter before, during, and after running each purifier. We record readings at 5-minute intervals over a 60-minute test cycle and report the percentage reduction and time to reach target levels.
Noise levels. We measure decibel output with a calibrated sound level meter placed one metre from the unit. We test at every fan speed, including sleep or night modes. Our published noise figures are real-world measurements, not manufacturer claims.
Power consumption. We plug each purifier into a watt meter and record power draw at every speed setting. We then calculate annual running costs at the current UK average electricity rate. This tells you exactly how much each purifier costs to run per day and per year.
Four-week real-world use. Beyond the controlled tests, every purifier spends at least four weeks in a lived-in home. We note practical details that do not show up in lab tests: how easy the filter is to change, whether the app is reliable, how the controls feel in the dark, and whether auto mode reacts sensibly to real-life triggers like cooking, opening a window, or vacuuming.
Filter analysis. At the end of the testing period, we inspect filters visually and weigh them to assess particle loading. This gives us data on real-world filter lifespan under UK conditions, rather than relying on manufacturer estimates.
Our Team
Sarah Mitchell leads all product testing and writes the majority of content on this site. With a background in environmental science and six years of hands-on experience testing indoor air quality products, Sarah brings a rigorous, data-first approach to every review.
Sarah has tested over 35 air purifiers across all price ranges, from budget models under £50 to premium units above £700. Her reviews are based on real-world use with calibrated instruments, not manufacturer claims or press releases.
Affiliate Disclosure
This site contains affiliate links to Amazon. When you click a link and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. This is how we fund our testing programme and keep the site running without paywalls or advertising.
Affiliate commissions do not influence our rankings or recommendations. Products are ranked based on test results, value for money, and suitability for UK homes. We have frequently ranked lower-commission products above higher-commission alternatives because they performed better in our testing.
We do not accept free products from manufacturers in exchange for reviews. We do not accept sponsored content or paid placements. Every product on this site was purchased at retail price or tested from our existing inventory.
